Ladder 2614 wins Election!

On Saturday Aug, 16th the residents of Fire District #1 approved the purchase of "a ladder fire truck and any equipment necessary in connection therewith" for the district. The ballot asked if the voters would authorize the district "to expend therefore, including incidental expenses, the sum not exceeding $630,000 and to issue bonds of the Fire District for said purposes in the principle amount not exceeding $630,000". With 143 residents turning out, the proposal won with a 77 voters approval to 66.

When asked how this will benefit the community, Fire Commissioner Stan Lewis said, "This truck will be of great value to the residents of Crosswicks, and those in Chesterfield. With the coming of the new Chesterfield Elementary School, this aerial apparatus will be of great value in gaining access to the two-story roof. That roof could be up to 35 feet high in some parts (due to land elevation). Right now there are no 35 foot ground ladders in town, and even so, they still will not reach the top of the building at the proper climbing angle."

Aside from the school, Commissioner Lewis also added, "The residents of the developments will benefit the most from this. With the narrow streets and winding alleyways, this maneuverable truck will fit in with ease. This is something that our current fleet cannot do that easily. And with the house so close to each other, there is sometimes not enough room for a ground ladder, or they are too high for roof access. This truck will most certainly be a plus in those incidents in the unfortunate even that they happen. In structural firefighting, it is often necessary to cut a hole in the room to allow for the ventilation of smoke and superheated gasses from the structure. This makes conditions inside more favorable for crews in finding the blaze, and the rescue of possible victims. If done properly and at the correct time, it can increase a disoriented victim or firefighter's chance of survival. A simple 4 x 8 hole, which is reality easy to patch up (with ply wood), can make a huge difference in how much of the structure can be saved."

Volunteer Captain Ryan Lynch adds, "With this ladder truck, we can keep our guys off the roof and on the ladder when performing work up there. Most new houses are made from lightweight truss construction, which can fail quite quickly when exposed to fire, let alone the additional weight of a firefighter. Homes today are being made with more glue and less nails. You can only imagine what happens when they are heated up."

This new piece of apparatus will replace the current Engine 2611 which turned 28 years old in June. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends that apparatus be replaced every 20 years. 2611 has had a great run in Crosswicks and will be sold at auction to another loving home.

One may ask how a ladder truck is going to replace an engine. Ladder 2614 will be used a quint type apparatus. "Without getting too technical, this truck will have a ladder on the top and an engine below", said Commissioner Lewis. In addition to the aerial device, there will be 500 gallons of water, a 2000 GPM pump, room for 1200 feet of 5 inch supply hose, 4 pre-connected attack hose lines, multiple ground ladders, and vehicle extrication tools (otherwise known as rescue tools, I.E. The Jaws of Life). This structural firefighting apparatus will be more than just a ladder truck. It will benefit the community in many ways, seen and unseen.

The Fire District #1 and The Union Fire Company thank the voters for allowing us to further protect them. We have been serving the community since 1822 and will do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe.
