Firefighters Conduct Firefighter Survival Training
Monday, August 10, 2009, 17:22 - Company News
Posted by B. Clarke
On Monday, August 3rd, volunteers from the Union Fire Company and District Career firefighters worked together at the former residence at the corner of Rt. 528 and Hogback Road. The home has been taken over for the future NJ Turnpike Expansion project, and its second floor provided a unique opportunity for the firefighters to practice firefighter survival techniques. One drill that took place was a basement rescue, in which the firefighters made a hole from the second floor down to the first, to simulate a removal hole that a rescue team could make to save a person trapped in a basement with no usable exit. In this case, the firefighters used a hose line to lower a rescuer down, who then assisted the firefighters above in lifting the victim to safety. The firefighters also worked on "Bailouts", in which they exit the building through a window because of fire in the building that is too intense for survival. After practicing on the first floor, the crew moved up to the second and worked with ladders to help remove firefighters from the top floor, and also to self-extricate by lowering down on a rope. These drills are helping to fully prepare the crews from Station 261 for the real-life emergencies they may face when operating the Quint fire truck, due to arrive later in the year.

If this sounds interesting to you, why not become a volunteer firefighter with the Union Fire Company? Call (609) 298-3111, or stop by the firehouse on weekdays for more information.
